Money over time

Paying months in a lump sum

A tenant hands you four months at once, or you clear three months of arrears. Record it in one go without losing the month-by-month record.

Rent rarely arrives one neat month at a time. Someone falls behind and then clears three months together; someone else pays six months up front to get it out of the way.

Recording those one month at a time is slow and easy to miscount. Businessly lets you do it in a single entry that still marks off each month separately.

How it works

Open the bill, rent or property and choose the lump-sum option.

  • Money coming to you: set Months to receive
  • Money going out: set Months to pay

Businessly shows the total it will record — Receive {amount} or Pay {amount} — so you can check it before saving. Set the date with Received on or Paid on.

Arrears and advance are the same action

You do not choose between "catching up" and "paying ahead". Businessly fills the unpaid months first, oldest to newest, and once those run out it continues into future months as advance.

The record stays month by month

This is the point. Even though you entered it once, the history still shows each month individually, marked paid, with its own date.

Checking what is outstanding

The item shows how many months are unpaid, and how many are paid in advance, so you always know where you stand before you ask anyone for money.

Undoing it

Recorded the wrong number of months? Undo the months individually from the schedule — each is its own entry, so you can correct just the ones that were wrong rather than unpicking the whole lump sum.

Where the money lands

Exactly where a single month would: your cash book, and the tenant's statement if they are one of your customers. One entry, correctly split, in every place it should appear.
