Rates & the calculation

One gold rate drives everything. The calculation is shown as a worked column, with the deduction editable in front of you so you can see what it does.

Setting your rates

Rates & settings holds the numbers that turn weights into rupees.

  • Gold rate per tola — type this and Gold rate per gram works itself out, dividing by the 1 tola equals (grams) figure below it. Change that figure and the per-gram rate is worked out again.
  • Gold rate per gram — you can still type your own. It stands until you change the per-tola rate or the tola figure again.
  • The jewellery deduction percentage
  • The Zakat day the rates are taken on

Rates used records what was applied — Gold rate, Deduction used and Taken on — so a year you look at in five years' time can still explain itself.

The calculation

The calculation shows it as a worked column rather than a single figure, one figure on each line:

Total assets (only shown when you owe something)
− Loans you took
Zakat base
Zakat rate × 2.5%
Zakat due = base × 2.5%

With no loans the base is your total assets, so that one line reads Zakat base (your total assets) instead of showing the same figure twice.

ZAKAT TO GIVE is the answer, tagged 2.5%, rounded up when you have chosen to round.

The deduction, in front of you

The jewellery deduction is editable on this page, not buried in settings. Change it and the total moves as you watch.

Rounding up

Businessly offers to round the final figure up — Give a little extra. It never rounds down.

Provisional until locked

While assets are still open the page shows Not locked yet, and the total is marked provisional. Lines you have not reviewed keep it that way.

Once your assets are settled, lock the year — see Locking a year.

Then give

Start giving takes you to the giving list, where you record what actually goes out. See Recording what you give.
